International conferences for big organizations are often held in different countries all around the world. These conferences are attended by natives of different regions speaking different languages. Often at times English is not the only language which is used in these conferences. This makes it difficult for those people who are not affluent in English. When other languages are also used, it becomes necessary to make the attendees understand the overall meaning of the conference. That is when conference interpreting comes into the limelight.

There are mainly two modes of interpreting- consecutive interpreting and simultaneous interpreting. Consecutive interpreting is generally done in small meetings, interviews, etc where interpretation is done in one-on-one basis. The speaker first asks a question or say something after which the interpreter translates it, then the listeners responds and to the question and interpreter translates that information and delivers the message. Simultaneous interpreting on the other hand is done simultaneously, where the interpreter translates what the speaker says almost immediately to a large group of audience. The simultaneous interpreting is needed in case of large meetings and conferences.

Conference interpreting, also known as simultaneous interpreting since delivered to large number of audience often requires different equipments. The conference interpreter interprets what the delegates speak simultaneouslyand those at the receiving end get the message in the language they understand, almost immediately. The best example of the multilingual conferences like those will be the conferences which are held in the United Nations that is attended by delegates all over the world requires conference interpreting the most. The conference interpreters are made to sit in sound proof booths, each booth working for different language. The conference interpreters hear what the speakers say through headsets and interpret it in their mind and deliver the information to the delegates through microphones. The delegates receive the interpreted information through the headsets. The use of electronic interpreting system is a necessity for conference interpreting. The professionals working for conference interpreting must be highly trained and must have strong linguistic skill to do the job at hand efficiently. Conference interpreting is quite different from written translation as it requires extensive oral communication skills from the professionals. The conference interpretation requires lot of training as this is highly intense job where interpreters have to be very proficient in both the source and target languages. A team of interpreters work together for a particular conference headed by a consultant interpreter. The consultant sees to it that all the requirements of the conference are fulfilled. The language needs of the conference are also checked by the conference consultant interpreter.
